Course details
Young Scholars Academy's Executive Function: Young & Thriving Level 1, Build Skills for School and Life is a live online class for bright, differently-wired students ages 9 to 17 who struggle to keep track of assignments. With Dr. Eric, each student builds their own three-tier task management system, then tests and improves it through weekly challenges. Sections run for ages 9 to 12 and 13 to 17, for enrichment or for credit with a transcript.
Many bright, differently-wired kids struggle with the everyday skills school runs on: keeping track of assignments, planning their time and getting started. That isn't their fault. They're often told what to do and never taught how to manage it. This class teaches the how.
In Level 1, students start by taking stock of their own strengths and learning styles. Then each one designs and builds a custom three-tier task management system. Nobody copies a template: every system fits the kid who built it.
The class is gamified. Students build a system, measure how it works, learn from it and make it better, taking on fun challenges with it every week. Dr. Eric covers the theory, real examples, technology and plenty of tips and tricks along the way.
Students use their systems to plan and track real assignments, so the practice isn't hypothetical. Dr. Eric posts weekly remarks, readings and assignments in Google Classroom. Students leave with executive function resources to keep their systems going after class ends.
WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING

$46.55 /week up front
Weekly readings and assignments are required, with grades and feedback posted every two weeks in Google Classroom, leading to high school credit on a Young Scholars Academy transcript.
If you homeschool, this works seamlessly. If your student attends another school full time, we create a report card and transcript that we share with you, and you share with the school. It is up to your primary school to accept it and add it to your student's official transcript.

Mentor & Course Instructor
Kylie Hushbeck is a teacher in rural Oklahoma. Growing up, her and her 2E brother loved museums, nature, books, and all things learning, except school. For Hushbeck, the anxiety school brought on could be overwhelming and for her brother, the structure and dynamics did not meet his ADHD/Autism needs. Now as an educator, she seeks to meet students where they are and find where they can thrive by building an inclusive and open environment, whether that is in a public school classroom, summer camp, or online class. Hushbeck has a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma. She has studied political activism ranging from Oklahoma's education protest to Italy's anti-mafia leagues. She is a member of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Society which champions education in the arts and sciences, fosters freedom of thought, and recognizes academic excellence. She was awarded Teacher of the Year for the high school she teaches at in the 2024-2025 school year. Hushbeck lives with her wife and two dogs in the town she grew up in. She is a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation. She enjoys reading, playing bass guitar, beadwork, and cooking for her loved ones.
