Your Child’s Big Leap: A Framework For Unleashing Your Kiddo’s Strengths

Part 1: Your Child Isn’t The Problem…

Is your child a vibrant ray of sunshine in your world, radiating unique interests, creativity, and curiosity at home, but seems to be dimmed by the demands of school and other “social norms”?

Much of life can have both us and our kiddos wondering, "What am I doing wrong?

Let’s be clear, it doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you or your child! Quite the contrary…

The problem that you’re facing is simply a challenge of alignment- your kiddo may be out of alignment with their strengths and the tasks that they’re being asked to do.

Let’s look at a great example: superheroes

As a society, we love superheroes because they have incredible superpowers that we could only dream of. Yet, in many ways, they are also normal people. Like us, the heroes have both superpowers and some superstruggles.

Here is the kicker:

Only PART of these heroes’ stories is their weaknesses. It’s not who they are… it’s only a PART of their story.

Imagine if their whole story was about these heroes attempting to fix their struggles.

For example, picture a world in which Superman never becomes Superman, never stops runaway trains, and never stands up to Lex Luthor, all because his whole life is centered around getting over his severe “kryptonite allergy”…

That would be miserable!

Superman is SUPER because of his strengths! He just happens to have a challenge, too.

Do you know the sad truth?

Many people, especially neurodivergent people, spend their whole lives in their struggle areas, trying to fix themselves and never realize their beautiful potential.

Most people have brains that are great at some things and struggle with others.

Society tells us that we must all do similar things to a similar level and it can feel awful when we struggle with some of those things. Especially when it’s not our fault.

Sound familiar?

Would you like to know how to help your kiddo break free from this cycle?

We’re going to explore how to help your child go from constantly focusing on their struggles to learning → learning how to focus on the areas where your kiddo is a superhero! This way they can live a strength-based life!

First of all, we need to get clear on one thing:

Let me just come right out and say it, it doesn’t matter what your child is bad at!

What matters is what they’re great at!

More importantly, the things that they’re great at AND that they LOVE DOING!

Part 2: There Is A Better Way!

This is where the concept of the Zone of Genius comes in!

In the life-changing book, The Big Leap, author Gay Henricks offers the best explanation to why our kids are feeling the way they do. More importantly, he offers us a framework on how we can get out of this harmful cycle and live our best life!

Imagine your child navigating a landscape with four distinct zones:

  • Zone of Genius: Their natural talents, passions, and strengths converge, creating effortless joy and fulfillment. Here, your child effortlessly builds intricate Lego creations, writes fantastical stories, or solves complex math problems with an infectious laugh.

  • Zone of Excellence: Skills learned and honed bring success, but might lack the intrinsic spark that ignites true passion. They may excel in a sport, driven by external rewards, but lack the inherent joy of the Zone of Genius.

  • Zone of Competence: Tasks tackled adequately, but without exceptional results or emotional engagement. Chores like brushing teeth fall here, necessary but not igniting their inner fire.

  • Zone of Incompetence: Areas of struggle and frustration, draining energy and hindering self-esteem. Standardized tests or social norms might reside here, causing stress and discouragement.

Many children, especially those neurodivergent, experience a wider gap between their zones. Their Zone of Genius may shine brightly, but the struggle in the Zone of Incompetence can be magnified, leading to feelings of inadequacy and frustration.

This framework is not about fixing what's "wrong" – it's about recognizing and celebrating the unique brilliance within. Imagine your child, no longer battling against the current of standardized expectations, but effortlessly gliding through a personalized ocean of their passions. This is the transformative power of The Big Leap.

How does it work? It's like shifting your child's focus from struggling in the shallows of the Zone of Incompetence to diving deep into the boundless depths of their Zone of Genius. Here, intrinsic motivation blossoms, replacing frustration with joy. Learning becomes an adventure, not a chore. Confidence takes root, fueled by the discovery of their unique strengths.

The Big Leap isn't a one-time jump, but a continuous journey. It's about creating an environment where your child can explore their passions, experiment without fear, and receive support to overcome challenges. This environment allows them to:

  • Discover their Zone of Genius: Through personalized assessments, self-reflection, and exploration, they identify their unique strengths and interests.

  • Develop their strengths: Engaging projects, tailored learning plans, and expert guidance nurture their talents and help them reach their full potential.

  • Embrace challenges: Supportive mentorship and a collaborative community provide a safe space to overcome obstacles and persevere in their journey.
