Course details
Young Scholars Academy's Arts & Crafts is a live online class for kids ages 7 to 11 who are happiest with their hands busy. Each week, Ms. L brings a new project, and kids make real things they can keep, use or give away, like popsicle-stick bird feeders, homemade squishies and pop-up birthday cards. Most supplies are everyday materials and recycled items from home.
Each week has a new project, so there are no units. Ms. L introduces the project and walks the class through it step by step. Kids make it alongside her, add their own touches, and show the group what they made.
Some weeks are about things kids can use or give: a bird feeder for the backyard, a homemade squishy, a gift box, a pop-up birthday card for someone special. Other weeks are about small worlds. Projects Ms. L has lined up include Cardboard Tube Creatures, Magical Fairy Doors, a Tiny Furniture Workshop, Build a Tiny House and an Underwater World.
Ms. L is trained to teach design, engineering, woodwork, textiles and food, and she teaches YSA's STEAM Lab and STEAM Inventors classes. She doesn't want to limit kids' ideas before they start designing, so students help work out which materials suit their project. When a project isn't a fit for a child, she offers another maker project instead.
Step-by-step instruction gives every child a way in, and there's room to change the design once they're comfortable. Every student can take part fully, whatever supplies they have on hand. Groups are small, cameras are optional, and kids can take a movement or quiet break when they need one.

Your recycling bin turns into their supply closet. They make a creature out of a cardboard tube in class and start planning a tiny house for it.
They start trusting their own ideas, making their own choices about materials and details instead of waiting to be told.
A short report from Ms. L about your child's actual work: what they made, where they shined, what's next.
You'll get this list by email when you enroll, then 1 week, 3 days and 1 day before class starts.
