Course details
Young Scholars Academy's LEGO Robotics & Engineering is a live online class for ages 5 to 8 where young builders turn a love of LEGO into their first real engineering projects. Each week, with Ms. Wish guiding every step, students build something that moves, test it and make it better, learning how gears, wheels and axles, levers and motors work. Classes are 45 minutes, sized for young learners, in a small group on Zoom.
LEGO Robotics & Engineering takes young builders from playing with bricks to their first real engineering projects. Each week students build something that moves. Ms. Wish guides every step.
Students take on a simple design challenge, build it with LEGO bricks and a motor, test it, and then make it better. Every challenge starts with build steps to follow, then students change the design their own way. When a build doesn't work the first time, that's part of the plan.
Classes are 45 minutes, with short building rounds and plenty of time for show and tell. Students use the right engineering words, share ideas, and cheer on each other's creations in a small, friendly group.
Along the way, kids pick up the big ideas behind how machines work: gears, wheels and axles, levers, and how to tell a motor what to do. They build and program their creations with LEGO Education SPIKE Essential and experiment with motors and sensors.

Yes. Each semester brings new design challenges, and builds get bigger and do more. Later, students can move on to STEAM Inventors: Creative Engineering, then Arduino Robotics.
Everyone starts together with Unit 1: Wheels and Axles, building things that roll.

Learning outcomes
Follow build steps, then change a design when it doesn't work the first time.
Name gears, axles, levers and motors and use those words the right way.
Finish a moving build and show it to friends.
Share ideas and cheer on classmates' creations.
Unit 1
Building things that roll.
Unit 2
Making one part turn another.
Unit 3
Lifting, pushing and launching.
Unit 4
Telling a motor what to do.
Growth · Progress reports
Their car keeps veering off, so they take the wheels off, rebuild it at the kitchen table, then tell you the axle was the problem.
A build that doesn't work stops feeling like a failure. It becomes something to test, fix and try again.

LEGO Robotics & Engineering FAQ
No. LEGO Robotics & Engineering at Young Scholars Academy is built for young learners, with 45-minute classes, short building rounds and lots of show and tell. Ms. Wish guides every step.
The LEGO Education SPIKE Essential Set (#45345, not SPIKE Prime), plus a computer or tablet with the free LEGO Education SPIKE App. LEGO has retired the set, so look for it secondhand on eBay or other resale sites, and check that a used set includes the electronic components.
No experience is needed. Students learn to tell a motor what to do as part of the class.
Not the whole time, but since some learners are quite young, a parent or another adult nearby can help with tech trouble or finding pieces, especially in the first few classes.
Students can keep taking LEGO Robotics & Engineering, with new design challenges each semester. As they grow, they can move on to other Young Scholars Academy building classes, like STEAM Inventors: Creative Engineering, and later Arduino Robotics.
