The Social Skills Course They Actually Want to Take

Parents tell us D&D is the best social skills course their child has ever taken, and their kids have no idea that is what is happening. In quest groups of just 6, students naturally build communication, teamwork, and executive function through the structure of the game itself. They learn to take turns, plan strategy, negotiate with teammates, and adapt to the unexpected. These are the collaboration and problem-solving skills colleges and employers look for.

Real Friendships With Kids Who Get Them

For many of our students, D&D is where they find their people for the first time. The small group format and shared storytelling create bonds that extend beyond the classroom. Parents watch their child go from isolated to texting quest-mates between sessions. That sense of belonging changes everything.

What Your Child Will Gain

  • Strengthen communication and collaboration skills through cooperative storytelling and group problem-solving
  • Develop creative thinking by bringing characters to life with voice, personality, and in-the-moment decision-making
  • Build reading comprehension, probability thinking, and strategic planning through gameplay mechanics
  • Form genuine friendships with a tight-knit group of just 6 like-minded adventurers over a full semester

Meet Your Mentors

Mr. Sean

Mr. Sean

Mentor & Dungeon Master

Sean (aka Mr. Sean) has been a Digital Educator for over 4 years now! He can't believe how much fun he's been having teaching thousands of kids from around the world about our beautiful planet and the amazing wonders that stretch to each and every corner of our world! He has also had the incredible opportunity to run Dungeons and Dragons adventures for his students for the last 2 years. And he is very excited to continue the adventures at YSA! In addition to D&D, Mr. Sean teaches D&D Campaign Creator, Inkarnate Map Making, Fan Fiction, Balatro: Poker and Probability, Wonders of the World, and AP Human Geography.

Megan

Megan

Mentor & Professional Dungeon Master

Megan is a Professional DM and mother to four kids ages 8 to 18. She loves role playing games, science fiction, comics, and just about anything that might be considered geeky. She has used her geeky passions to help educate her own children, as well as others. Her personal background is in History. She has a bachelor's degree in History and has also studied literature and mass communication. All of this tends to be channeled into her teaching style. She is also a mom of two neurodivergent kids and has learned how to build lesson plans and campaigns around individual needs. Learning is a fun process when approached through the window of something the child already loves, whether that is gaming, comic books, or anything that has captured their mind.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS COURSE

Questions About Dungeons and Dragons

Everything you need to know before enrolling your child.

How does D&D work in an online class?

Students join a live virtual session where the mentor runs the campaign using shared digital tools. No prior D&D experience is required. The game naturally builds social skills, creative problem-solving, collaborative storytelling, and executive function in a format that gifted and neurodivergent kids are drawn to. Students engage with the story, make decisions together, and build characters across the semester.

What is the difference between the 50-minute and 75-minute sessions?

The 50-minute sessions are designed for younger adventurers (ages 5-12) and keep the pacing tight and engaging. The 75-minute sessions serve older students (ages 13-25) and allow for deeper storytelling, more complex encounters, and extended roleplay. Both formats follow the same collaborative D&D structure with a maximum of 6 students per quest.

My child has never played D&D before. Can they still join?

Absolutely. Many of our students start with zero D&D experience. Our mentors introduce the rules gradually through play, so your child learns by doing rather than studying a rulebook. Within a few sessions, they are making decisions, solving puzzles, and building their character with confidence.

Can my child join from anywhere?

Yes. YSA families join from 47+ states and 17 countries across 6 continents. All you need is an internet connection. We schedule sections across multiple time zones so families worldwide can find a time that works.

What if my child is not the right age for this course?

Our gifted and 2e students experience such asynchronous development that hard age limits rarely tell the full story. If your student should be aged up or aged down, contact us at support@youngscholarsacademy.org or click the chat in the bottom right corner of the screen. We do this all the time.

What if my child has had a difficult time learning virtually?

Please don't confuse reactive distance learning with what happens at YSA. When a kid is engaged in a course they chose, with a mentor who gets them and peers who share their interests, the screen disappears. They're not on a screen. They're with their people. Parents tell us their children fight to log on to YSA.

Who are the D&D mentors?

Dungeons and Dragons is taught by two mentors this semester. Mr. Sean is a Digital Educator and Game Master who has been running D&D adventures for students for over 2 years. Megan is a Professional Dungeon Master with a History degree who builds campaigns around individual student needs. Please check the mentor listed for each session when enrolling to ensure the right fit for your child.

What if my child doesn't love this course?

If your child isn't loving a course by the end of the first week, swap into a different course. Same semester. No questions. Not the right fit within the first month? We'll stop payments, switch courses, or issue credit toward any future course. The credit never expires. And you keep every bonus you've received. Over 93% of YSA families don't just stay. They add more courses.

Does my child need to turn their camera on?

No. Cameras are always optional. Always. Many of our students start with cameras off and turn them on when they're comfortable. Our mentors engage every student equally, cameras on or off.

Does my child need a diagnosis to enroll?

No. If you're here, you're in the right place. We don't require paperwork, evaluations, or labels. Whether your child has been formally identified as gifted or twice-exceptional, whether you suspect it but haven't pursued testing, or whether you just know your kid's brain works differently and nothing else has fit, they're welcome here.

Can I use ESA or charter funds for this course?

Yes. YSA is an approved vendor with 10+ state ESA programs including Arizona ESA, Utah Fits All, ClassWallet, My Tech High, Florida Step Up, and others. Enroll directly to secure your child's spot, submit the invoice to your ESA, and your payment method is refunded when funds transfer. Many families pay zero out of pocket.

How do I enroll?

Click "Show Me Available Times" on this page, pick the section that fits your schedule, and your child's spot is secured immediately. No phone call. No placement test. No prerequisite.

Their best year starts here.

Right now, a kid who thinks like your kid is in a course they chose, with a mentor who was once just like them, surrounded by friends who don't think they're weird... they think they're interesting.
Your child is one click from finding out what that feels like.
